Gilfach translates from the Welsh as ‘nook’ or ‘hideaway’. This perfectly describes the farm, tucked away in a steep sided valley yet only 5mins drive from the A40. The farm dates back four hundred years, part of the original stone barn has been converted into the Barn Loft. Just north of the Brecon Beacons national park and nestling in the folds of the hills. The loft is beautifully decorated and everything you need to enjoy tranquillity and rest.
The Loft benefits from all modern comforts to make it a warm and cosy place to snuggle into whatever the weather. The washroom has a power shower and the king sized bed has top quality wool duvet and luxury mattress topper. The original oak roof trusses are lovely to see – but please mind your head! There is Freeview TV and WiFi. There is also collection of books, DVDs and games.
Gilfach is a traditional Welsh hill farm. There are sixty acres of pasture, ancient woodland, larch plantation and rough bracken and wetland meadows. It is home five British White cows and five horses. Guests are welcome to explore the farm and beyond along the rights of way leading from Gilfach’s land. There are wonderful views of Pen-y-Fan from the top of the farm and a stream flowing along the lower border, there is a mass flora and fauna to see with red kites and buzzards circling up and down the valley. The area’s Dark Sky status and the lack of light pollution makes Gilfach ideal for great stargazing.
Gilfach is on the northern edge of the Brecon Beacons National park. This is a wild and dramatic landscape with steeped with fascinating geology and history. There are hills to climb, ridges to stride along and lakes to swim in. Castles to explore, beautiful gardens to visit, and rivers for canoeing and fishing. There are the show caves at Dan Yr Ogof and the famous waterfalls at Ysradfellte. There is mountain railway and industrial heritage still visible in the landscape and preserved in the Big Pit Coal Museum at Blaenavon. Easily within reach for a day trip, you can enjoy the world-renowned beeches of the Gower peninsula or even head to Pendine Sands (famous for land speed records) and further afield to Tendby and Pembroke.
The farm is twenty mins drive from Brecon where there are supermarkets, high street shopping, a cathedral and museums and leisure centre. In the opposite direction it is only slightly further to Llandovery – or for the nearest city it’s a fifty min drive to Swansea. The villages of Sennybridge, Defynnog and Trecastle are all just a few minutes from the farm. All have great places to eat and there is a very good fish and chip shop, a garage with café that serves a really good breakfast.
The Barn Loft sits in the main farm complex in the roof of the main barn. You have your own access and can come and go as you please. You can bring your car to the steps up to the Loft if necessary. Other things to note Gilfach is pet-friendly and well-behaved dogs are welcome to stay. Dogs are requested to not sleep on sofas or beds!
